BCIX internet exchange opens second new location this year

Berlin, 2011/03/24 – With its new location at Gradestrasse 60, in the internet gateway of telecommunication provider Level 3, the Berlin Commercial Internet Exchange e. V. (BCIX) has now opened its second new location so far this year. In so doing, BCIX has increased its presence as a peering points operator in Berlin, going from three locations in 2010 to five in 2011.

BCIX is meeting the high demands of its members and customers by making additional peering points (the integration of IP networks for data exchange) and larger port capacities available in Berlin’s data centers.

“Overall, data traffic at BCIX grew roughly 400 percent in 2010 alone”, says BCIX chairman Peter Lampe. “We see the increased data volumes as an engine for Berlin-Brandenburg’s 30,000 companies in the creative industries. Indeed, Berlin has accomplished much in recent years in precisely this field, the operation of large data volumes.” Companies profit from internet exchange points, which provide favourable networking conditions while allowing them to save on costly data lines.

Along with the new Level 3 location at Gradestrasse 60, BCIX operates in the data centers at Gradestrasse 40 (Versatel), Lützowstrasse 105 (I/P/B/ CarrierColo), Nonnendammallee 15 (e-shelter) and Alboinkontor – Alboinstrasse 36-42 (Lambdanet). With its new exchange point at Level 3, BCIX has made considerable progress towards its goal of becoming Germany’s second largest internet hub.

BCIX Upgrade at e-shelter Berlin

This morning at 5:00 a.m. we activated our new Brocade BigIron RX-8 Switch at e-shelter facility Berlin. Not only, that now have eight 10Gbit/s Ports installed in this location, we also activated our first DWDM system. We’re currently using a 8 channel DWDM system and started with two channels. That means that we now have a 20Gbit/s connection from e-shelter facility to I/P/B/ Carrier-Colo which can easily scaled up to 80Gbit/s without service interruption. Thanks to Steffen David (BCIX) and Mario Apitz (The unbelievable Machine Company) for support.

Neuer BCIX-Standort in Berlin

Der BCIX eröffnete am 01.10.2008 den dritten Switch-Standort in Berlin.

Ab sofort betreibt der BCIX im neuen Hochsicherheits-Rechenzentrum von e-shelter an der Nonnendammallee einen Switch im eigenen Rack. Der Rackstellplatz wird samt Strom von e-shelter für 24 Monate kostenfrei zur Verfügung gestellt. “Der Aufbau des neuen BCIX-Knotens hier in der Nonnendammallee ist ein deutliches Signal für das Vertrauen in die Zukunft unseres RZ-Standortes,” sagt Peter Lampe, Manager Kundenprojekte von e-shelter. “In meiner Funktion als BCIX-Vorstandsvorsitzender freue ich mich natürlich über das Engagement unseres Unternehmens, welches mit diesem Schritt die Bedeutung des BCIX für den Standort Berlin anerkennt.”

Die erforderliche Anbindung des neuen BCIX-Knotens an den BCIX-Standort Lützowstraße wird mit zunächst 1 Gigabit/s für sechs Monate von I/P/B/ Internet Provider Berlin gesponsort. Der IPB Geschäftsführer und Technische Vorstand des BCIX Steffen David meint: “Auch unser Unternehmen möchte den BCIX auf seinem Expansionskurs unterstützen. Als erster Full-Service-ISP am neuen Standort Nonnendammallee freuen wir uns, durch die Leitungsbereitstellung die Position des BCIX als größten Internet-Austauschknoten Berlins zu manifestieren.”
