BCIX internet exchange opens second new location this year

Berlin, 2011/03/24 – With its new location at Gradestrasse 60, in the internet gateway of telecommunication provider Level 3, the Berlin Commercial Internet Exchange e. V. (BCIX) has now opened its second new location so far this year. In so doing, BCIX has increased its presence as a peering points operator in Berlin, going from three locations in 2010 to five in 2011.

BCIX is meeting the high demands of its members and customers by making additional peering points (the integration of IP networks for data exchange) and larger port capacities available in Berlin’s data centers.

“Overall, data traffic at BCIX grew roughly 400 percent in 2010 alone”, says BCIX chairman Peter Lampe. “We see the increased data volumes as an engine for Berlin-Brandenburg’s 30,000 companies in the creative industries. Indeed, Berlin has accomplished much in recent years in precisely this field, the operation of large data volumes.” Companies profit from internet exchange points, which provide favourable networking conditions while allowing them to save on costly data lines.

Along with the new Level 3 location at Gradestrasse 60, BCIX operates in the data centers at Gradestrasse 40 (Versatel), Lützowstrasse 105 (I/P/B/ CarrierColo), Nonnendammallee 15 (e-shelter) and Alboinkontor – Alboinstrasse 36-42 (Lambdanet). With its new exchange point at Level 3, BCIX has made considerable progress towards its goal of becoming Germany’s second largest internet hub.

LambdaNet sponsors BCIX

The Hanover based telecommunication and internet service provider hosts BCIX in Berlin.

Since December 2010, LambdaNet Communications Deutschland AG, one of the leading providers of telecommunication and internet services, hosts the internet exchange company BCIX (Berlin Commercial Internet Exchange e. V.) in its co-location in Berlin and therewith underlines its status as one of the leading internet service providers in Europe.

Due to this sponsoring partnership, LambdaNet´s customers are provided with a direct physical connectivity to the “Berlin Internet Exchange and Peering Point“. Internet exchange or peering points are places where IP-net providers exchange their IP-traffic to ensure their clients´ access to third party IP-nets.

In addition to its exchange points in three more co-locations in Berlin, BCIX is now available for LambdaNet´s clients with a single wiring. The advantage for LambdaNet´s and BCIX´s customers lies in saving expensive leased lines, through which the needed connection otherwise would have been established. The peering policy or traffic relation agreement is negotiated directly between BCIX and the co-location customer in order to guarantee a simple and – more important – immediate interconnection.

Philipp Groß, COO at LambdaNet Communications Deutschland AG, summarizes the objectives of the sponsoring partnership as follows: “Our focus is on the constant enhancement of our services as well as the permanent reduction of expenses for our customers. The cooperation with BCIX helps us to take a big step towards reaching this objective. Our clients can be connected to the “Berlin Internet Exchange and Peering Point“ quickly and at low costs.“
